Build Unique Touch-Controlled Synthesizers with One Powerful ESP32-S3 Board

Designed for makers, musicians, and audio developers, this ESP32-S3 development board brings together high-quality audio, ultra-responsive touch control, and flexible power management in a compact platform built specifically for musical instruments.

At its core is an ESP32-S3 N16R8, combining 16 MB of flash memory, 8 MB of PSRAM, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy, and native USB connectivity. It gives you the processing power and memory needed to create sophisticated standalone synthesizers, samplers, MIDI controllers, effects units, and interactive sound installations.

24 Ultra-Responsive Touch Electrodes

Two MPR121 capacitive touch controllers provide up to 24 touch-sensitive inputs with extremely low latency.

This makes it possible to design instruments with expressive, unconventional interfaces: keyboards, touch strips, handpan-inspired layouts, drum pads, multidimensional controllers, or completely new playing surfaces.

Instead of starting with a generic microcontroller board and adding multiple external modules, you already have the essential building blocks for creating a complete touch-controlled electronic instrument.

High-Quality Low-Noise Audio Output

Audio is handled by a Texas Instruments PCM5102 DAC, selected for its low-noise performance and clean stereo output.

Whether you are building a digital synthesizer, sample player, granular instrument, drum machine, or audio effects processor, the PCM5102 provides a reliable audio stage designed for applications where sound quality truly matters.

Flexible and Efficient Power Supply

The integrated low-power buck-boost power supply can deliver up to 1 A and accepts a wide input voltage range from 1.8 V to 5.5 V.

Power your project using:

  • Standard batteries
  • Rechargeable battery packs
  • USB-C
  • Variable-voltage portable power sources

The buck-boost architecture maintains a stable supply even as the battery voltage changes, making the board ideal for portable and battery-powered instruments.

Native USB and USB MIDI

The ESP32-S3 native USB connection allows direct programming and enables the board to operate as a USB MIDI device over USB-C.

A dedicated CH343 USB-to-serial interface is also included, giving you an additional and convenient programming and debugging option.

This dual-USB architecture offers maximum flexibility during development while making it easy to create plug-and-play MIDI instruments.

Expand Your Instrument

The board includes:

  • A built-in microSD card slot
  • 10 accessible GPIO connections
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy
  • Native USB
  • CH343 USB-to-serial
  • Stereo audio output
  • 24 capacitive touch inputs

The additional GPIO connections can be used to add components such as:

  • Contact microphones
  • Displays
  • Buttons
  • Encoders
  • Joysticks
  • LEDs
  • Sensors
  • External controllers

The microSD card slot provides storage for samples, presets, wavetables, firmware assets, and recorded audio.

One Board, Endless Instrument Possibilities

This board was created to remove the complexity of assembling multiple separate modules.

Touch sensing, high-quality audio, storage, wireless connectivity, battery-compatible power management, USB MIDI, and expansion GPIOs are all available on a single platform.

It is an ideal foundation for:

  • Touch-controlled synthesizers
  • Portable samplers
  • Digital handpans
  • MIDI controllers
  • Experimental musical interfaces
  • Interactive sound installations
  • Drum machines
  • Granular instruments
  • Educational audio projects
  • Custom standalone electronic instruments

With carefully selected components and an architecture designed around musical creation, this board gives you everything you need to build tactile electronic instruments that feel, sound, and behave unlike anything else.
